Increase your self-esteem by using self-compassion to manage shame (1 minute read)

This post “Increase your self-esteem by using self-compassion to manage shame” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by listening to your feelings and heal self-destructive shame.

Increase your self-esteem by using self-compassion to manage shame:

The following 5 steps based on Compassion Focused Therapy, CFT, aim to heal self-critical shame:

Step 1 focuses on understanding the links among personal problems, including shame, to earlier life circumstances when excessive shame was developed as an adaptive and helpful response to avoid being alienated from close ones.

Step 2 focuses on difficult situations and childhood memories to understand how too much self-critical shame was developed.

Step 3 focuses on understanding how current thinking patterns developed earlier in life have become maladaptive, but also the illusionary nature of thoughts.

Step 4 is about understanding the emotional and motivational systems of humans and their connection to shame.

Step 5:

Step 5 is about developing resources for becoming more self-compassionate. This is developed by exploring thoughts and trying out behavioral experiments. This includes identifying the common inner critical voice connected to shame, understanding where it comes from, what triggers it as well as how to talk back to it.
