One way of reducing self-critical shame is to become more self-compassionate.

This includes identifying the common inner critical voice connected to shame and understanding where it comes from as well as what triggers it, to be able to talk back.

As discussed earlier in an earlier post, how you talk to yourself is extremely important. Often we are not aware of this, but it is common to have a critical inner voice evaluating ourselves harshly and disproportionately in situations, being overgeneralizing in a judgmental and destructive way: “how stupid of me…”

“Can’t you do anything right…”

“Are you for real…”

“Idiot…” .
Exploring this and learning how to talk back in your head will aid the process of slowly breaking free from an inner critic by sowing seeds of doubt of whether the voice is an accurate, helpful, kind and nuanced perspective of reality.
