One way of reducing self-critical shame is to become more self-compassionate.
The exercises in the last posts have been about breaking free from unhealthy shame by:
-Talking back to the inner critic
-Being supportive of yourself
-Activating the caring safety system of the body.
If this is too difficult to start with, try by changing perspective:
Say and do to yourself what you would say and do to your child or a close friend who are too self-critical and you heard them say demeaning and hurtful things about themselves?
Often, we are kinder to others, but we will also greatly benefit by treating ourselves with the same compassion and understanding.
In terms of identity, this exercise will aid the process of breaking free from the inner critic by transforming the critical voice through sowing seeds of doubts that the voice is the truth – it is not. It is only statements that are not necessarily true and definitely not helpful.
