Increase your self-esteem by separating shame from guilt (1 minute read)

Here, the post “Increase your self-esteem by separating shame from guilt” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by understanding your feelings.

Increase your self-esteem by separating shame from guilt:

The innate emotion shame is often expressed as humiliation. There are different types of shame which correspond to activating different levels of helpful/ unhelpful behaviours which in turn impact our wellbeing.

This post is about the third type of shame.

3 There is another often discussed dimension of shame in the meaning of interpreting a misfortunate outcome as shame. Here the personal identity is not separated from the incident. In this perspective shame makes the person worthless: “I did something wrong hence I am wrong, I do not deserve to be a part of this at all” instead of the more adaptive cousin guilt which is: “I did something wrong, I have to repair/fix it/apologize, but that is not all that I am, everybody makes mistakes sometimes and I am just one of them”

More about shame and what to do about it in next week’s post.
