This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding how feelings trigger shame” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by listening to your feelings and heal self-destructive shame.
Increase your self-esteem by understanding how feelings trigger shame:
One way of reducing self-critical shame is to understand the underlying emotions that can trigger shame.
Understanding emotions can be achieved through:
-Keeping an diary over the feelings that show up during the day
-Mapping core beliefs about oneself, the world and others
-Practicing mindfulness: being fully present in the current moment, being aware of where you are and what you are doing but not overly responsive or overwhelmed by what is going on, see earlier posts
-Practicing mentalization, i.e. explore to get an understanding of mental states and feelings of both ourselves and others that underlie the visible behaviours
-Practicing techniques for how to calm strong negative feelings and increase the intensity and presence of positive feelings. This includes strategies for decreasing disproportionate fear, anxiety, anger, self-criticism and shame, see earlier posts.
