Increase your self-esteem by step 2: Understand the origins of your unhealthy shame (1 minute read)

Here, the post “Increase your self-esteem by step 2: Understand the origins of your unhealthy shame” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by understanding your feelings.

Increase your self-esteem by step 2: Understand the origins of your unhealthy shame:

This post continues on the last posts’ different aspects of shame and how to be free from too much and harsh shame.

If harmful shame is a common feeling in your life, you can try the 5 steps from Compassion Focused Therapy, CFT, created by the psychologist Paul Gilbert.

Step 2 Build insight:

Go through difficult situations and childhood memories to understand why you have developed exaggerated shame: For example, have you been exposed to difficult situations without adequate support and comfort for important relatives, such as your parents and/or siblings. This often has an impact on the volume of feelings today as well as the use of defense mechanisms, see earlier posts.

This can also lead to problems with shame, anger, isolation, apprehension in social gatherings, self-critical thoughts as well as preference for activities reinforcing self-sufficiency and loneliness.

More about shame and what to do about it in upcoming posts.
