How To Handle Strong = Hot Emotions

The intensity of feelings is sometimes labelled ‘hot’ or ‘cold’. This depends on how strong reaction they generate in the nervous system.

Hot feelings create strong reactions combined with a strong impulse to act. Cold emotions create less reactions in the body.

Even if we know our fear is disproportionately strong, the feeling firstly has to be acknowledged, see last week’s post. This per se calms the body.

Thereafter, you can talk to yourself about the realism in your fear. This will calm the emotion even more.

If you are high in the intensity of the feeling so that you are in the fight-flight mode, you first have to calm the intensity of the feeling. This will help you reappraise the situation.

For example, you can use the techniques I have described under Stress about how to decrease acute stress.
